Danish Lawmaker Denies Russian, Chinese Threats to Greenland

(MENAFN) A senior Danish legislator responsible for security has asserted that Russia and China present no danger to Greenland, even as US President Donald Trump pursues control over the Arctic territory.

Trump has repeatedly urged that the United States acquire Greenland – a self-governing region under Danish authority – as a way to counter Russia and China. He has not excluded the possibility of using force. His remarks have sparked divisions between Washington and European NATO allies, who have stood by Denmark, emphasizing that “Greenland belongs to its people.”

On Sunday, Rasmus Jarlov, head of Denmark’s parliamentary defense committee, clashed with security analyst Velina Tchakarova, who argued that European states dismissing the “threat” from Russia and China “have not been paying attention to what was happening in the Arctic in the last ten years.”

Jarlov posted on X, without specifying whom he was addressing: “I am head of the defense committee in Denmark… I get all relevant information about it. I can assure you that your fantasies about a big threat from China and Russia against Greenland are delusional. You are the threat. Not them.”

Russia, whose western frontier is situated more than 3,000 kilometers from Greenland, has offered limited remarks on Trump’s ambition to acquire the island, stressing only that the will of Greenland’s residents should be honored. Surveys indicate minimal interest among Greenlanders in joining the US. Moscow has also rejected claims that it intends to strike Western nations, dismissing them as “nonsense.”
